The I Ching

The I Ching (易经 – Book of Changes) is one of humanity's oldest books, consulted for over three thousand years. It is simultaneously a divination manual, a philosophical system, and a guide to practical wisdom rooted in the observation of natural patterns.

Its 64 hexagrams — each a unique combination of six broken and unbroken lines — represent the full range of human situations and the energies that move through them. The I Ching does not predict fixed futures; it illuminates the nature of the present moment and the tendencies that flow from it.

The Oracle — Lao Sheng 老聖

The AI Oracle speaks as Lao Sheng (Old Sage) — a serene Taoist elder deeply versed in the hexagrams, the Tao Te Ching, and Confucian commentary. Lao Sheng speaks in the tradition of the ancient sages: calm, unhurried, poetic but clear.

The Oracle is powered by Claude, Anthropic's AI. It grounds all responses in the actual hexagram cast and the user's question, connecting ancient wisdom to present circumstances without predicting fixed outcomes.

How to Cast

Three Coins Method: Three coins are tossed six times. Heads (3) and tails (2) are summed to produce a number from 6–9 for each line, determining whether each line is yin, yang, or changing.

Yarrow Stalk Method: A simulation of the traditional yarrow stalk divination, which uses a different probability distribution (more weight to stable lines) for those who prefer classical accuracy.

Changing Lines: Lines 6 (old yin) or 9 (old yang) are "changing" — they transform into their opposite, generating a relating hexagram that shows the direction of movement.

IChing.app is fully anonymous. No accounts, no login, no tracking. Your readings are stored only in your browser's local storage — up to five readings at a time. Nothing is sent to our servers except your Oracle queries.

This platform is entirely free. All wisdom is freely given. If you find genuine value in a reading, you are welcome to make a voluntary offering — in the tradition of consulting a sage. No subscription, no paywalls, ever.
