The Judgment
Difficulty at the Beginning works supreme success, furthering through perseverance. Nothing should be undertaken. It furthers to appoint helpers.
Like a seedling breaking through hard soil, the birth of something new is always accompanied by chaos and strain. The energy is present but the form has not yet coalesced. This is not the time for grand action but for patient gathering of support.
The Image
Clouds and thunder — the image of Difficulty at the Beginning. Thus the superior person brings order out of confusion.
Before the rain falls, clouds and thunder create confusion. The wise person uses this time of uncertainty not to panic but to lay foundations, sort priorities, and build structure.
The Six Lines
Line 1
Hesitation and hindrance. It furthers one to remain persevering. It furthers to appoint helpers.
At the very start, obstacles feel overwhelming. Do not force forward. Gather good people around you and establish your footing.
Line 2
Difficulties pile up. Horse and wagon part. The maiden is chaste. She does not betroth herself. Ten years — then she betrothes.
The right connection is delayed, not denied. Honor the waiting period. Hasty choices born of impatience lead to regret.
Line 3
Whoever hunts deer without the forester only loses their way. The superior person understands and gives up the quarry.
Pushing into unfamiliar territory without guidance wastes energy and leads to loss. Knowing when to stop is wisdom, not defeat.
Line 4
Horse and wagon part. Strive for union. To go brings good fortune. Everything acts to further.
The opportunity for help is at hand. Accept it with humility and move forward with the support you have been given.
Line 5
Difficulties in blessing. A little perseverance brings good fortune. Great perseverance brings misfortune.
Small steady steps work; grand sweeping efforts overshoot. Work with what is directly in front of you.
Line 6
Horse and wagon part. Bloody tears flow.
If one has not built sufficient support and pushes forward anyway, the situation collapses entirely. Grief follows forced action in impossible conditions.
