The Judgment

Retreat has success. In what is small, perseverance furthers.

The dark forces advance from below. The wise person recognizes this and retreats gracefully — not in defeat, but in strategic withdrawal that preserves strength for the appropriate time of engagement. Heaven retreating before the mountain is not weakness; it is the dignity of knowing when to step back.

The Image

Mountain under heaven — the image of Retreat. Thus the superior person keeps the inferior person at a distance, not angrily but with dignity.

Retreat does not require hostility. The superior person simply removes themselves from diminishing influences with quiet dignity and continues their own cultivation.

The Six Lines

Line 1

At the tail in retreat. This is dangerous. One must not wish to undertake anything.

Being at the rear of a retreat is dangerous. Do not attempt bold actions in this position.

Line 2

One holds on with yellow oxhide. No one can tear themselves away.

A firm, supple bond to what is right — held not through rigidity but through genuine connection — cannot be broken.

Line 3

A halted retreat is nerve-wracking and dangerous. To retain people as men- and maidservants brings good fortune.

When retreat is blocked, maintain calm. Attending to immediate domestic responsibilities prevents larger harm.

Line 4

Voluntary retreat brings good fortune to the superior person and downfall to the inferior.

The person who chooses to withdraw wisely flourishes. The one who mistakes retreat for cowardice and fights the current suffers.

Line 5

Friendly retreat. Perseverance brings good fortune.

Retreating with warmth and goodwill toward those one leaves behind — this is the finest kind of withdrawal.

Line 6

Cheerful retreat. Everything serves to further.

Complete, joyful, unburdened withdrawal. The person who can step back without resentment or attachment is truly free.
