The Judgment

Development. The maiden is given in marriage. Good fortune. Perseverance furthers.

The geese migrating in formation — gradual, ordered, natural. Development that proceeds step by step, following the proper sequence, reaches its destination without losing what it has gained along the way.

The Image

On the mountain, a tree — the image of Development. Thus the superior person abides in dignity and virtue, in order to improve the mores.

A tree on a mountain grows slowly but firmly. The person of character cultivates themselves steadily over time, and their influence on the community's customs and values grows correspondingly.

The Six Lines

Line 1

The wild goose gradually draws near the shore. The young son is in danger. There is talk. No blame.

First arrival — unfamiliar territory, minor dangers, gossip from others. Hold steady; there is no real fault.

Line 2

The wild goose gradually draws near the cliff. Eating and drinking in peace and concord. Good fortune.

A resting place found, nourishment shared. The second stage of development brings genuine comfort and companionship.

Line 3

The wild goose gradually draws near the plateau. The man goes forth and does not return. The woman carries a child but does not bring it forth. Misfortune. It furthers one to fight off robbers.

Overextension — going beyond the proper stage of development. What should come to fruition does not. Defend what has already been established.

Line 4

The wild goose gradually draws near the tree. Perhaps it will find a flat branch. No blame.

Adapting to an unexpected situation — finding a way to rest even where one did not plan to. Flexibility without blame.

Line 5

The wild goose gradually draws near the summit. For three years the woman has no child. In the end nothing can hinder her. Good fortune.

Near the goal, a long period of apparent fruitlessness. But the development has proceeded rightly, and the completion comes at last.

Line 6

The wild goose gradually draws near the cloud heights. Its feathers can be used for the sacred dance. Good fortune.

The highest stage of development — transcending ordinary utility, the achievement becomes an inspiration and offering. Pure, elevated, freely given.
